1954 on the fictional San Piedro Island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, north of Puget Sound, in Washington state, Kabuo Miyamoto, a Japanese American, is accused of killing a respected fisherman in the close-knit community.  

Snow Falling on the Cedars explores the effects of war, how racism can undermine justice in a court of law, the mystery of human motivation, and the notions of fairness, forgiveness and alienation.
